Greetings, ABC Members; this is Rhiana Gay with our Education Committee. Do you know a Black educator who displays distinguished and outstanding performance on many dimensions? Our committee is looking for the 2023 Alaska Black Caucus Teacher and Paraprofessional of the Year. Please email Rhiana for more information and to nominate educators you know.
Many of you have heard that the Anchorage School District is experiencing budget cuts. As a result, some schools will be closed, which could impact our precious populations’ academics, growth, and mental health. Consider watching the School Board meetings to get more information on how you can stay informed and advocate. In addition, there is an opportunity to provide written and in-person public testimony. Rhiana is available to help craft a 3 minutes testimony if needed.
In October, Our committee participated in Global Day of Service with Elder Adrienne Richardson in the past month. We were able to serve over 200 homeless people in our community. Our youth made over 250 sandwiches. We also distributed socks, underwear, coats, hoodies, sweaters, hats, gloves, personal hygiene products, other cold-weather supplies, and essential outreach information.
Ghoul Out the Vote was a smashing success. Many vendors were supporting educating parents and youth about the power of voting. In addition, participants could practice Rank Choice Voting (RSV) by choosing their favorite candies. Community talents were cheered on too.
Our next meeting will take place on Monday, November 21, at 6-7 pm on Zoom; please join us. Zoom Meeting
