SUMMARY:Community Conversation: Segregation and the Church
DESCRIPTION:\n\n\nHear from local and national pastors as we discuss Segreg
ation and the Church. \n\nThe most segregated hour in America is on Sunda
y mornings at 11:00 AM with Christians. Sunday morning remains one of the
most segregated hours in American life\, with more than 8 in 10 congregati
ons made up of one predominant racial group. And most worshipers like it th
at way.\n\nTwo-thirds of American churchgoers (67 percent) say their churc
h has done enough to become racially diverse. And less than half think the
ir church should become more diverse.\n\nThose are among the findings of a
study of church segregation by Nashville-based LifeWay Research. Research
ers surveyed 994 churchgoers—who attend worship at least at holidays or
more often—about race and the church. They also surveyed 1\,000 American
s as well as 1\,000 Protestant senior pastors.\n\n\nView the recording of

SUMMARY:Community Conversation: Alaska’s Black Elders: the Fight Against
 Racial Inequality
DESCRIPTION:\n\n\nThis Community Conversation will discuss Alaska’s Black
elders and seniors - those that did their part to fight against racial in
equality. But the fight for fairness and dignity continues.\n\nMany of tod
ay’s black elders risked their lives and courageously led the movement t
o fight racial inequality and bestow upon us the many freedoms we enjoy to
day. The 1950s and 1960s were turbulent moments in U.S. history—a time w
hen racial segregation and discrimination were at the epicenter of our con
temporary civil rights movement.\n\nAfrican Americans have a long history
in the United States.  Many have been here for generations\, while others
are recent immigrants who come from various parts of the world\, includin
g the West Indies\, Africa and the Caribbean. According to the Administrat
ion on Aging\, the Black or African American older population was 3.2 mill
ion\, or 8.3% of the older population\, in 2008 and is projected to grow t
o over 9.9 million\, or 11%\, by 2050.\n\nWhile many black elders were cha
mpions for change during the Civil Rights Movement\, today they remain imp
acted by a lingering inequality. Join us to hear from Alaska’s Black eld
 ers.\n\n\nView the Community Conversation below.\n\n\n\n
