The Justice Committee has been committed to advocating for the implementation of body-worn cameras for the Anchorage Police Department for the past two years. The Alaska Black Caucus, the Northern Justice Project, and the NAACP Anchorage Branch proposed APD, and the Municipality publicly released body cam recordings last February.
Then the Alaska Black Caucus sued the Municipality of Anchorage over delays in equipping police with body cameras on April 19, 2023. As far as we know, there are still no body cams.
So, we are calling our members and allies to action:
On July 12, 2023, at 5:00 pm, there was a public rally in the Town Square.
On July 25, 2023, the Municipality of Anchorage Assembly will meet in the Assembly Chambers in the Loussac Library at 5:00 pm. The agenda will include an ordinance addressing the body-worn camera policy.
We hope everyone will be able to attend and support this effort.
