The Anchorage School District School Board has met twice thus far. Superintendent Dr. Bryantt mentioned in a news article last month that the District continues to face a budget crisis and a predicted continued decline in enrollment. There have been three PLC Mondays with students experiencing a one-hour late start. At the August committee meeting, there was a discussion about local organizations partnering with their local elementary school to provide free child care for the PLC Monday periods. Jessica met with a couple of Board members at an event in late August, and there is already something like this in the works at some of the elementary schools, with the hope for services to expand.
The Education Committee hosted the “It Takes A Village” community conversation on September 10, with panelists including:
- Deena Bishop, Alaska Department of Education & Early Development Commissioner
- Cessilye Williams, Former Clark Middle School Principal
- Stephanie McFadden Evans, Director of Education and Engagement at Alaska Public Media
We hope you enjoy listening to or watching the conversation on Facebook!
We’re sad to announce that Jessica Cook will be stepping down as chair of the Education Committee. If you or someone you know is interested in joining the Education Committee, please contact thealaskablackcaucus@gmail.com.
