Bringing Project Power to Life

Here’s what’s happening in the Health Committee.

Project Power: Following a successful cohort with Project Power (The American Diabetes Association program), the ABC Health Committee seeks more participants to join the next cohort. This program is a win-win-win for everyone. The American Diabetes Association educates participants to prevent and manage Type 2 diabetes, and ABC receives a $2,500 stipend for every cohort of 25 or more participants.

We ask our friends to share this link to Project Power and Referral Code D-1007 to help us grow the cohort.

Project Power is an online program accessible from anywhere with a connection to the internet. If you would like to help us, get the word out, there are three options:

1. Tap the Project Power flyer on the ABC Health Committee Page and use Referral Code D-1007 to join the next cohort.

2. Share the ABC Health Committee Page on your social media with Referral Code D-1007 to encourage your friends and neighbors to join.

3. Share a hardcopy flyer in your neighborhood. We have printed the flyer on the ABC Health Committee page and added a QR code that can be scanned to take people to the Project Power website and use Referral Code D-1007. Members of the Health Committee will share the flyer in our neighborhoods, and we would love for you to share it in yours. Contact us to get a copy.

There is no limit on the number of cohorts we can create. We aim to help as many people in our community as possible to prevent diabetes or improve their health outcomes. Thank you for being so helpful.

November 12 Community Conversation Prep: On November 12, The ABC Health Committee will host the Community Conversation. Our topic is Breast Cancer: Prevention, Early Intervention, Treatment, and Recovery. We gathered our speakers and organized our thoughts and questions around this topic. Please let us know if you or someone you know has expertise in these topics.

Rural Outreach: New members joined our Health Committee meeting outside Anchorage. The Health Committee is working on expanding our contacts around the state. It recognizes that health equity and access are critical to the health of the BIPOC community members living in rural Alaska. Please help us spread the word and join us for our next meeting on Tuesday, October 17, at 7 p.m.

The Barbershop Project: The ABC Health Committee recognizes that health education can be delivered in various ways and venues. One lesson from The Black Alaskans Health Needs Assessment is that health education is lacking among the Black male population. To change that, we are kicking off a project to reach out to this community through local Barbershops. We are utilizing the Alaska Black Business Directory and contacting our community members to help with this project. We are in the very early stages of development and could use your help getting this off the ground. Don’t hesitate to contact us to learn how you can be involved.

The Bettye Davis Summit: Mark your calendars for Saturday, February 10, 2024, and join us for The Bettye Davis Summit at Bettye Davis East Anchorage High School. Last year’s event was a tremendous success; the Summit grows yearly. We are looking for sponsors and vendors for this event (contact ABC to find out how you can be involved). Watch this space for updates on presenters and The Health Committee portion of the event.
