Alaska Black Caucus Justice Committee
Report for 2/27/2025
Reestablishing the Public Safety Advisory Commission
The Anchorage Assembly initially established the Public Safety Advisory Commission (PSAC) in May 1995, focusing on community membership to develop a comprehensive public safety plan for the Municipality of Anchorage. However, in August 2020, a Sunset Audit Report recommended that the commission be temporarily reauthorized and that a worksession be held to evaluate its role and determine whether it should continue to exist.
In 2023, a follow-up Sunset Audit Report called for another review of the commission’s viability, again suggesting a worksession to reassess its purpose. Ultimately, on January 31, 2024, the Assembly agreed to terminate the commission.
Since the PSAC’s termination, several Assembly members have explored the possibility of reinstating the commission in some capacity, potentially with an updated mission and duties. The Alaska Black Caucus, alongside other community members within the Alaska Coalition for Justice, stands ready to collaborate with the Assembly and municipal agencies to discuss the reestablishment of the PSAC or the creation of a new entity dedicated to ensuring community engagement in public safety issues. We will keep you informed on our efforts and developments regarding this important initiative.
