BHM 2022: Black Health & Wellness

As this year’s theme for Black History Month is Black Health and Wellness, the Health Committee is proud to highlight a few of our ongoing projects. Together, “we are determined to create a platform that shines a light on the multiple facets of Black health and wellness through education and activism. There is much to uncover, amplify, question, and correct.”

ABC welcomed Joel Bervell to present at the January 30th Community Conversation: Racism is a public health crisis. Joel is a medical student committed to fighting health disparities in medicine through education and regularly shares topics about racial disparities and biases in healthcare and other industries on his TikTok and Instagram where his platforms have over 400,000+ combined followers. He presented on the topic: ‘Racism is a public health crisis. New Media, New Advocacy: How racial bias is being tackled in medicine.’ It was an incredible talk. Beginning this month, ABC will launch Health Equity Grand Rounds ECHO: a six part series exploring racism in medicine, health equity, and COVID-19 in Alaska.  in partnership with UAA Project ECHO. The ABC has partnered with the Alaska ECHO Project to deliver a grand rounds style health equity series, utilizing municipal grant funds to address systemic disparities among Black, Indigenous, and people of color (BIPOC) in Alaska. The target audience for the series includes interdisciplinary healthcare providers, public health professionals, healthcare administrators, leaders, members of the allied health team, and health professions trainees in Alaska.
