Working Towards Long-Term Justice

Anchorage Police Department (APD) Body Cameras. Where are the body cameras that we voted and paid for? In this newsletter our President/CEO has described our efforts and frustrations with APD and the Municipal Administration in getting body cams on the street.

The Justice Committee will continue to push APD to honor the will of our community.

Members can help by calling in to the Assembly Public Safety Committee meetings on the first Wednesday of each month from 11:00 to 12:30. You can watch the November meeting and APD Update below.

The next Public Safety Committee meeting is December 7, 2022 at 11:00.

FUTURE LONG TERM PROJECTS

Credible Messenger. The Justice Committee has discussed working with the Anchorage Reentry Coalition to create a public safety and mentorship intervention program based on a “Credible Messenger” approach. This program could be routed through the Alaska Black Caucus, and geared toward engaging the BIPOC community in Anchorage to reduce recidivism.

Prison Reform. The Justice Committee is very concerned about the 16 deaths this year among those incarcerated in Alaska jails in prisons. We are exploring collaborating with other social justice organizations to address DOC conditions of confinement.

Civilian Police Review Board. The debacle of getting APD to initiate the use of body cams demonstrates the need for a Police Civilian Review Board in Anchorage.
